Dr Tamás Joó, colleague of the National Laboratory for Health Security Data-Driven Health Division and his co-authors published an internationally collaborative research report on the global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in the September issue of the Lancet. The comprehensive study examined the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) between 1990 and 2021. It estimated that 4.71 million deaths were attributable to bacterial AMR in 2021. The numbers are projected to increase further in 2050, with 1.91 million deaths attributable to AMR and 8.22 million AMR-related deaths worldwide.

The study highlights the importance of prevention of infections, vaccination, correct use of antibiotics and the development of new medicines.
